Classes are not the only thing returning this fall. The Hunter College men's soccer team, women's volleyball and tennis teams, and both the men's and women's cross country teams are all back! The Hawks are beginning their 2009 campaigns for CUNY Athletic Championship titles and trips to the NCAA Tournament.
After winning their first CUNY Athletic Conference Championship in nine years, the men's soccer team hopes to continue its success in the 2009 fall season. Led by head coach Jose Cedeno, who earned Coach of the Year honors last season, and assistant coaches Brooks Paskett and Ian Rees, the team is looking forward to "taking on the challenge of defending their championship," said senior all-star Oscar Dotti, one of the several returning all-stars. "Even though we lost a couple of key players, I am still confident and believe that the team is strong," Dotti said. The men's soccer team will open their season against Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday, Sept. 2.
The women's volleyball team has proven that they are a force to be reckoned with by winning three straight CUNYAC Championship titles and earning several trips to the NCAA Tournament. They will begin their exigent schedule on Sept. 2 in Hoboken, NJ against not one, but two opponents in a tri-match versus Fairleigh Dickinson University and Stevens Institute of Technology. The team is coached by Ray Bello and assistant coaches Alice Kahrs and Renee Bello.
On Wednesday, Sept. 9, the women's tennis team will open their 2009-10 season against conference foe Lehman College. The Hawks are looking forward to earning their tenth consecutive CUNYAC Championship and fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. The team only had one graduating senior last year, Monica Calungcagi, and therefore will have many experienced players returning to lead the team in 2009. Lauren Leo will be entering her second season as the team's head coach.
The men's cross country team is set to get underway as well. In 2008, the team barely lost the CUNYAC championship in a heartbreaking tie-breaker to conference rival Brooklyn College.
