Dear Editor,

Thank you for publishing the "Glorious Steinem" article. When members of the Hunter Women's Rights Coalition (HWRC) saw the cover article on Gloria, we were thrilled. It is fitting that Hunter, a college started as a woman's college, and with a student body of 72% women, dedicated its cover article and photo to one of the greatest female icons of our time.

However, we were disappointed that the article did not mention how nine members of HWRC - including last year's VP, and this year's president, VP and treasurer - attended the event, and how a Hunter student helped include the free DVD of the feminist film, What's Your Point, Hone? in the gift bags audience members received.

I have had the incredible fortune of being in contact with Gloria since HWRC helped organize the historic Freedom on Our Terms Conference with her at Hunter in 2007. I was also at the Ms. Foundation's Gloria awards last year, and was able to send two officers to a recent film screening and discussion with her, and I was in touch with Prof. Tuzyline Allan, who helped organize the event at Baruch. She was kind enough to invite me and three other HWRC members to the private reception with Gloria before her speech; we were able to enjoy intimate conversations with her, and take photos. All of us Hunterites agreed that Gloria is one of the most down-to-earth and beautiful people we know, inside and out. As a Hunter student, instead of the photo with Baruch's president, we would have preferred to see a photo with Hunterites.

In addition to having a large Hunter presence at the event, we also helped NYU and Marymount Manhattan College students attend the event, and helped publicize it to all of CUNY.

I also went up to the mic afterward and mentioned the significance of the free DVD most attendees received. I also announced the upcoming public forum for the CUNY-wide sexual assault policy, which will be held at Hunter on April 29.

It was disappointing not to see the Hunter connection to such an important event, especially since Gloria lives a few blocks away, and Hunter has always fostered feminism.

Sincerely,
Jerin Alam
