I have no eloquent opinions on the minor requirement, but the topic is somewhat connected to a fundamental issue that I, and I am sure many others, grudgingly hold against our school. When the minor was eliminated, I wanted to find out if I could still easily complete mine.
"We have never been just a collection of red states and blue states. We have been and always will be the United States of America." Inspirational words. Hopeful words. Words that speak of the potential for change. Words from our 44th president that enunciate a dream of a better future and of progress for a nation that has been divided far too long by partisan politics.
Hunter College has no minor requirement anymore, and I honestly couldn't care less. But if I were to give my two cents on the subject, it would be this: I know many people are ecstatic over this news, but to me, it just seems like a cop-out-one more excuse not to learn.
Beginning with the class graduating this winter, a minor course of study to accompany the major will no longer be a graduation requirement for most students at Hunter. Some rejoiced at the news of this decision. Some lamented it. Most, it seems, did not notice.
